Gandamadana Parvatham is another place to visit in Rameshwaram. Also known as Rama Theertham, this shrine has the marks of lord Rama’s feet on a chakra when he has gone there to search for Goddess Sita who was abducted by demon Ravana. Located on a hillock, at a distance of 3 km from Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, it is visited by thousands of devotees who come here to seek blessings of the Lord. Almost every devotees on a Rameshwaram tour visit this theertham as well.
There are other shrines too which are located nearby such as Satchi Hanuman Temple and Sukreevar Teertham. It is also located close to another popular shrine Danushkodi Temple. This temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is located on the top of the hills called Gandamadana Parvatham. Inside the temple, footprints of Lord Rama have been kept on a Chaka.
Rama Theertham, also called as Lord Rama’s footprint, has many legends associated to it. According to a legend, Lord Rama had met Vibhishana, brother of demon Ravana at this place. Vibhishana has helped Lord Rama in his war against ravana so as to put an end to the wrongdoings of the demon. The temple also has an image of Vibhishana.
As per another legend, it is the first place where Lord Rama has rested after his extensive search for Goddess Sita when she was captured by demon Ravana. It is believed Lord had waited here for a while looking at the vast expanse of Ocean between the places where he was standing and Lanka where Goddess was kept in confinement.
Along with its high religious significance, it also allures visitor with the breathtaking scenic beauty. Considered to be the highest point in Rameshwaram, the view of the entire island and the sea from the top of this place is mesmerising. The view of sunset and sunrise is especially captivating here. Many tourists visit this place during early morning and evenings for the view of shimmering sun amid captivating landscapes.
