Pamban Bridge is another attraction in Rameshwaram that is worth visiting when on a Rameshwaram tour. It is located at a distance of 7 km from Rameshwaram. It is the first sea bridge to be constructed in India. With a length of 2.3 km (road bridge) and 2.6 km (rail bridge), this bridge is built on artificial sandstone and has been created in the shape of an arch. It has about 43 pillars supporting the structure and around 64 pillars which have been built in the sea itself.
Built as a part of South Indian Railway project, this bridge was completed in 1912, its construction was started in the year of 1887. Around the same time, Neel Mandir temple was also constructed. In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. Pamban Bridge is the second largest bridge in India, after the Bandra-Worli sea link, which has been constructed recently. The Pamban rail bridge is also considered to be the longest rail bridge. This railway bridge has been upgraded to carry broad gauge trains by Indian Railways in 2007.
Pamban bridge is also associated to a legend; it is believed that this bridge has been constructed at a sacred place named Pamban. Pamban is the place where Lord Rama has an arrow to the ground so as to get the water to quench Goddess Sita’s thirst.

Central part of the Pamban Bridge was designed by a German engineer Scherzer. This part opens for the ships and boats to cross under the bridge.
